Help Now: Supplies

How is it that the City of New York or the Red Cross is not supplying basic equipment like winterized coveralls, boots and digging tools? All we know is that men and women need them. Here are some examples:

supplies

  • Winterized Carhartts offer protection from debris and cold weather. The fire department is now being told to wear the Bunker gear, their fire fighting uniforms, to ground zero if they are cold. The problem with this is that they must often return to regular duty immediately after serving at Ground Zero. This means they must wear their contaminated gear for another 24 hours. The police department is being told to buy their own., at around $200, that is unfair considering the Carhartts sometimes get destroyed within three or more uses. Regular uniforms do not offer protection from the debris or the severe cold that is to come.
  • Black Safety Toe/Steel Shank construction boots – Any boots worn to ground zero are more or less destroyed and contaminated. These boots offer protection from sharp metal, heavy objects, water and cold. Fire fighters are only given one pair of bunker boots and like the situation with the bunker gear have to wear their contaminated boots in their firehouses after working at ground zero. Everyone is expected to buy his or her own boots.
